Lamang ang may alam!
May babala ulit ang Department of Health (DOH) sa publiko on the heels of the reported cases on polio.
Mag-ingat ang lahat sa diphtheria, isang toxin-related disease, dahil mula January until September of 2019, meron nang naitalang 167 cases and 40 deaths among Filipinos.
If not properly treated, posibleng mauwi ito sa heart problems, paralysis, and even death.
ANO ANG SANHI NG DIPHTHERIA?
Kumakalat ito from one person to another sa pamamagitan ng pag-ubo, pagbahing, at direct physical contact sa isang carrier (person carrying the disease).
Maaasri ring makuha ito by touching an infected object such as the carrier's clothes or a toy na hinawakan niya.
Sabi rin ng DOH, diphtheria is more likely to spread in crowded places like schools, hospitals, and households.
ANO ANG SYMPTOMS NG DIPHTHERIA?
Kadalasan, aakalahing ordinary flu lamang ang sintomas nito.
Ayon sa World Health Organization (WHO), "The illness has an acute onset and the main characteristics are sore throat, low fever and swollen glands in the neck."
If left untreated, diphtheria can lead to more complicated disorders, particularly myocarditis and peripheral neuropathy.
Ang Myocarditis ay isang sakit na ini-inflate ang heart muscle causing it to enlarge and weaken.
Ang peripheral neuropathy naman ay isang nerve disorder that can weaken the extremities and cause autonomic dysfunction.
Tumatagal ang Diphtheria two to five days or longer mula nang na-acquire ito ng pasyente.
Dagdag ng WHO, "Diphtheria is fatal in five to ten percent of cases, with a higher mortality rate in young children."
ANO ANG PREVENTION FOR DIPHTHERIA?
Diptheria vaccine is your family's primary protection against the deadly disease.
Kadalasang ibinibigay ito in combination with other vaccines as DPT or diphtheria, pertussis, and tetanus vaccine.
DOH recommends "immunization of infants with 3 doses of DPT at ages 6 weeks old, 10 weeks old and 14 weeks old).
Bigyan rin ang mga toddler ng booster shots at 12-23 months, four to seven years old, and nine to 15 years old.
Para sa mga 16 years old and above, WHO recommends getting shots of Td vaccine: "For adolescents and adults the diphtheria toxoid is frequently combined with tetanus toxoid in lower concentration (Td vaccine).
