Subic, Philippines --  Celebrations and greetings poured forth as the Philippines snatches its first gold medal in the 30th Southeast Asian Games 2019,

John Leerams Chicano gave a spectacular performance as he won the men’s triathlon at the Boardwalk area here, overshadowing everyone else in the 1.5-kilometer swim, 40-kilometer bike, and 10-kilometer run with a personal-best time of 1 hour, 53 minutes, and 26 seconds.

Chicano was followed by  fellow FIlipino Andrew Kim Remolino, who won the silver with a 1:55:03 clocking and made it a 1-2 finish for the Philippines.

Both Filipinos were followed by cheers and shouts of support from the crowd as they broke from the pack and was then trailed by M. Ahlul Firman of Indonesia, garnering the bronze for his efforts with a time of 1:57:10.

Chicano,  a silver medalist in the 2017 edition, led the Filipino team after team captain and back-to-back gold medalist Nikko Huelgas sat out this year's SEA Games due to a hand injury that sidelined him for the first quarter of 2019.

Chicano, a Subic-based triathlete, cites homecourt advantage as motivation for his win. “Ito na ang simula ng next level ng triathlon sa Pilipinas,” said Chicano, whose pregnant wife was at the finish line cheering him on.

Remolino, a SEA Games newbie from Cebu, said: “It’s an accomplishment po talaga na makasabayan si kuya Rambo (Chicano).”

Olongapo Mayor Rolen Paulino Jr. echoed the sentiments of his country men when he said that " Congrats John Chicano (Rambo), ikaw  ang unang nagbigay ng ginto para sa Pilipinas sa SEAGAMES, We are all proud of you! God Bless you and God Bless Olongapo!. (Randy V. Datu)
